It’s no secret that Tom Cruise likes to run in his movies – be it on a beach, Times Square, or even horizontally across a building in Dubai. I dare you to come up with a film he’s in where he doesn’t have a sprinting scene.
In a recent article, Amy Rushlow, senior editor at Yahoo!, breaks down Tom Cruise’s running form and explains why it looks so good on screen. Apparently what makes his running form worth a million bucks is exactly the advice that we give our runners at The Micheli Center in our Quick Start Running and Gait Retraining programs! So, if you want to look like a movie star when you’re running, just remember the following tips:
Keep your core tight. Minimize the movement in your pelvic area.
Use powerful arm swings. Keep your elbows bent at about 90 degrees and avoid swinging your arms across your body.
Run with quick foot turnover (cadence) and short strides when sprinting to increase your speed.
Explosions. Ok, maybe leave this one to Tom Cruise.
Perhaps The Micheli Center should consider offering gait retraining in Hollywood for actors and actresses! Our first client would of course be Phoebe, played by Lisa Kudrow, from F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
But for now, if you would like to improve your own running form, check out the running programs we offer. We can’t guarantee you’ll look like Tom Cruise, but you’ll be one step closer!
