Staff Highlight: Dr. Taryn Brandt

Meet Taryn Brandt, PsyD, CMPC! Dr. Brandt brings a deep passion for sport and performance psychology shaped by her own experience as a competitive figure skater. Now part of the team at The Micheli Center and Boston Children’s Hospital, she’s dedicated to helping young athletes navigate challenges with resilience, self-compassion, and confidence, on and off the ice.
Hometown: I currently live in Belmont, MA but have lived in eleven states and one Canadian province throughout my life so there isn’t necessarily a place I call my hometown!
Alma maters: University of Hartford (undergraduate), University of Denver (masters), and Springfield College (doctorate)

Favorite sport to watch: As a competitive figure skater throughout much of my life, my favorite sport to watch is figure skating! I grew up with Michelle Kwan as my idol but now I love watching so many athletes in the sport. I am also a huge gymnastics fan, especially Simone Biles!
Favorite places you’ve traveled to: Tanzania where I had the amazing opportunity to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. I also love Thailand and Barcelona, Spain.
What drew you to The Micheli Center/Boston Children’s Hospital: The ability to work with an incredible interdisciplinary team and support kids, teens, and young adults in a meaningful way. It also excites me to work at a teaching hospital with so many opportunities to learn and grow as a clinician!
How did you develop an interest in sport psychology: My interest in sport and performance psychology began in high school where I was known as the “motivational speaker” at the ice arena, especially prior to major competitive events. After a long recovery from an ankle injury, I chose to pursue a career where I could help athletes to overcome challenges and discover their own path to success and achievement. I want athletes to feel seen, heard, and to help them develop a toolbox of coping strategies to support their mental health, well-being, and performance.
What are small changes people could make that would have a large impact in their overall health: Practicing self-compassion! My favorite question to encourage people to incorporate more into their lives is, “what would you say to a close friend or family member if they were facing this current challenge or in your situation?” We are always so much more patient and kinder toward our loved ones and turning that toward ourselves can be a superpower!
What is your preferred method of exercise, either a certain activity or specific regimen: Yoga, figure skating, rock climbing, and hiking! My dog, Clover, and I have hiked the 46 high peaks (above 4000 feet) in the Adirondacks and we have almost completed the 48 high peaks in New Hampshire!
